Before you say yes to that new car, stop and consider the following three questions. You may want to know a little more about any hidden costs, extra features, or the number of miles on the car. This way you can better prepare your budget for paying the car off overtime and know what to expect when it comes to your new car’s maintenance.
- Are there any extra bells and whistles installed into the car?
Sometimes a car dealer adds items as a way to boost profit from the car they will be trying to sell you. Add-ons include:
- Nitrogen-filled tires
- Window tinting
- Wheel locks
- All-weather floor mats
- Paint protection
The markup on these add-ons can cost you a pretty penny. You’ll want to know about any add-ons in advance when you’re asking for a price quote. You can try to negotiate with the dealer regarding these add-ons as well.
- How many miles are on the car?
Not all new cars come with less than 10 miles on the odometer due to test drivers or being a part of a dealer trade. You should try and negotiate a lower price for cars with more than 300 miles on the odometer. Keep in mind that the in-service date is when the warranty begins. Knowing the number of miles on the vehicle can help you determine the type of maintenance it might require.
- Can I get the car delivered?
This may seem like an odd question to ask your dealer but if you’re shopping for a car online, it doesn’t hurt to ask. The dealership will be open to the idea of delivering the vehicle to your home if you mention that the delivery of the vehicle will seal the deal for you. When the car is delivered, a dealer representative will also arrive to have you sign your contracts. Keep in mind that any extended warranties or deals may not be a part of the contract you are signing. Having the vehicle delivered allows you to skip hearing about these extras but if you think you will want one, you can always request to speak with a manager and discuss your options.
Remember these questions to ask at a dealership the next time you are on the market for a new/new-to-you car.
